In one of Fr. Jerry M.
Orbos, SVD’s books — Just a Moment — he asks a powerful question: “Was
there a moment in your life when you experienced God in a very real and
personal way?” My answer is a wholehearted yes — not just once, but
many times.
I didn’t grow up
religious. I wasn’t taught to rely on God’s grace. As a child, life felt messy,
hopeless, and out of control. I wanted to grow up fast so I could fix the
things I hated most — especially the way we were living. Back then I didn’t
know it, but God was already working behind the scenes.
The first time I truly
felt His presence was in 2008, when I passed the bar exam. That year, the
passing rate was unexpectedly adjusted — something I saw as God’s perfect
timing. Honestly, if that
didn’t happen, I don’t know how I would have survived it. It was a turning
point that made me believe God sees us, hears our whispered
prayers, and knows how much we struggle. From that day, I promised
myself to live right, honor His gift, and practice my profession with integrity
— knowing that He could take away that opportunity just as quickly.
The second moment was when
He blessed me with a loving family — a patient husband and beautiful children
who make everyday life feel simple, yet full.
The third was my two
promotions — especially the most recent one. I prayed hard, worked hard, and
when the decision rested with the appointing power, God still opened the door
for me. I wasn’t the only qualified applicant, yet I was chosen to serve. That
reminded me that what is meant for you will never pass you by.
There were also silent
miracles — the kind that only make sense when you look back. When our family
would face problems, He made the burden bearable. What looked impossible
suddenly had a way out. When I unexpectedly won in the town raffle, I was able
to use it for my medications after being diagnosed with bowel disease and colon
inflammation. It wasn't luck — it was provision. His way of making sure I had
what I needed before I even asked.
There are too many moments
to list. Time and time again, God showed up — not always with fireworks, but
always on time.
Life isn’t perfect. It
never will be. But I’ve learned that God is closest when life feels hardest. As
long as we continue seeking Him, trusting Him, and thanking Him, He will never
fail to surprise us with grace.
Forever grateful, Lord —
for the blessings I prayed for, and especially for the blessings I didn’t even
know I needed.
How about you — when was
the last time you felt God’s presence in a real and personal way?
